Little & Often

Buds along a stem, further apart each time, like practice spread over days

Alpha. It runs, with rough edges.

Ear training in short, finished practices: intervals, and whether a note is higher, lower, sharp or flat.

What it is

Little & Often is a small practice app. A practice is about ten questions, three to five minutes, and then it tells you you’re done for today. Practice is spaced over days, so what you’ve learnt comes back just before you’d forget it.

It’s built to teach, not to hold your attention. There are no streaks to lose, no timers, and no rewards beyond seeing what you’ve mastered. A wrong answer plays what you chose next to what it was, so you hear the difference.

There are two packs. Intervals trains your ear to name the gap between two notes. Pitch asks whether a note is higher, lower or the same, then whether it’s sharp, flat or in tune, down to ten cents (a tenth of a semitone).

Nothing leaves the phone. A grown-up, past a check meant for adults, can add learners, choose how long a practice is and how many are allowed in a day, and share progress as a file.

Who it’s for

Children learning music, with a parent or teacher, and anyone who wants to train their ear for a few minutes a day.

How far along it is

Built for iPhone, with two music packs, several learners, and progress a grown-up can share as a spreadsheet. Next come a full check on a real phone, then TestFlight and the App Store.

How to get it

Not available yet. It goes to testers first, through Apple’s TestFlight, then to the App Store. It will be free, and it collects nothing: see the privacy policy.
