Inverse Foley
Idea. Not working yet.
Hear a sound and name what made it: struck, scraped, rolled or poured.
What it is
In film, a Foley artist makes the sound of a thing happening: coconut shells for horses’ hooves, snapped celery for breaking bones. Inverse Foley goes the other way. It listens to a sound and says what physically happened to make it: something struck, scraped, rolled or poured.
When you play the gorse on the home page, the word above it (struck, brushed, plucked, popped) names what you did. Inverse Foley aims to give that kind of answer from the sound alone.
Who it’s for
People building sound tools that need to know what happened, not just how loud it was: audio plugins, and AI (artificial intelligence) agents that work with sound.
How far along it is
An early research prototype exists, but it doesn’t recognise everyday sounds yet. The build log will appear in the notes.
How to get it
Nothing to get yet. Follow the notes to see it being built.
